Monthly Book Draft Challenge : April

Monthly Book Draft Challenge : April

April showers are over, people! April showers!

And I am so ready for some May flowers, let me tell you. Because flowers are pretty. And flowers mean BUNNIES.

I feel like 2018 is really starting to come into its own, you know? Instead of the sad trickle off of the dumpster-fire that was 2017, it’s starting to leave its mark as its OWN year. And good things too, because boy howdy, do we need a fresh start. Bad things have happened in 2018, but for the first tim,e I feel like real CHANGE is happening. Big changes. Changes way outside the scope of this little blog, and it’s awesome.
But let’s not get too crazy. Refocus. Obviously, you’re here for my Monthly Book Draft Challenge Check-In, and I won’t disappoint!

Fairytale: 4k
Spellbound: 7k

Total: 11k

I feel like I’ve said this about twenty times already, but my personal edits for Fairytale are finally done! At least, you know, for the next few weeks. Let’s see how long it lasts this time.

So what happened this month?

  • I sent Fairytale off to a professional editor! After seven LONG drafts, it has finally reached the point where I felt it ready enough to go under the pen of a professional. She’s had it for about a week now and I’m eagerly anticipating reading her notes and corrections.
  • I reached the halfway point on Spellbound! I outline my first drafts at around 60k, so I knew I wanted to make a minimum of 30k this month, and now Spellbound has reached that hump. Yay! But it’s a bit of an emotionally draining novel for me, so I think it’s time to let it rest for a little whole and start on something new.
  • You guys heard it first, my husband and I are officially house hunting! THIS IS HUGE. We’ve just begun the process and I know we have a few long more months ahead of us, but it’s all extremely exciting!
  • My family and I are going on a cruise!!! Okay, breathe, it’s not until next year, but we did book it this month and we will be traveling through Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Russia, all throughout the two weeks surrounding my birthday. I’ve never been on a cruise before and it’s going to be so beautiful and amazing! I can’t wait! If you have any tips or suggestions, TELL MEEEEEE!!!

The year is starting to feel like a year, and I’m happy. Like I was having a lot of trouble adjusting to 2018, everything felt way too fast and slow at the same time and things were getting squished together and it was all just WEIRD. But I think I’m okay now. I hope.

Oh. Also. This morning me and 2 other cars almost hit a skunk on the road. I KNOW. Poor thing. We all swerved like crazy, but not to worry, I saw it dart off back to the safety of the field after we all had passed. Still. That was close.

  1. yay a cruise that’s exciting! I cannot wait to hear how the professional editing of I sent Fairytale went Vee! I’m glad you mention putting a WIP to rest and work in a new one because I’ve been thinking about it and I never do it because I got this feeling that I’m not been “committed’ to finish my first WIP but taking a break make sense! Happy house hunting!

Thank you! Maybe my next month’s check-in I’ll have more updates on my edits and the house hunt 🙂

And I definitely think it can be productive and mentally healthy to take breaks on your writing and switch to something else. I honestly think if I tried to work on a novel straight through I’d NEVER complete anything!

  2. How exciting that you’ve sent your book off to a professional editor! Have you done any writing conferences? I’m doing one in June that I’m really excited about called WIFYR (Writers and Illustrators for Young Readers). I’ve talked to several people who say it’s legitimately like a mini-MFA and you get tons out of it. You should check it out HERE. (In case it’s not obvious, I’m trying to recruit people I know from the blog to go with me—writing can be a lonely endeavor sometimes, and it’s way more fun when you have others to talk to about it! I’m going to the 5-day Trent Reedy workshop.)

I actually haven’t done a writing conference before, or even been to any sort of book-related event or convention, so thanks for the rec! I don’t know if I’m just terrible at searching for these types of things or maybe they’re honestly just that rare, but it seems like most of these events are huge, pricey and often require a lot of traveling. Maybe there just isn’t much interest in smaller scale events?

  3. BUNNIES! I saw a baby bun when I was walking home the other day (I love living in the countryside). It would have made ny day but I’d seen a man chasing his pet ferret down the high street a couple of hours before.

Congrats on the book! I’d never have the dedication, I get bored writing a 6 paragraph review.

I’m house hunting too but we live in England and we’re poor so we’re looking to rent. I hate the town I’m in, although it’s amongst countryside it’s quite industrial and it’s a long walk to town. The place I want to move to looks gorgeous, there’s plenty of shops (and a Waterstones bookshop!), plus it’s a short train ride away from Bath.

Aww, I’m jealous of the baby bun! My Grandma used to live across the street from a tree farm and we saw buns ALL THE TIME. Sadly they cut all the trees down and now all the buns are gone 🙁
Good luck on the house hunting! It’s so stressful, but I’m sure with some patience we’ll both find the perfect new abode 🙂 And thank you! I can’t wait to complete my edits!!

  4. Looks like you had a great month! Congrats on sending your book to an editor and reaching the halfway point on Spellbound! Good lukc with the house hunting as well (We’re house hunting too, it’s quite exciting 🙂 )

Ooh, best of luck to you on the house hunting too! It’s exciting but also kind of terrifying?? Haha, but I AM looking forward to creating my own home office! <3

Thank you! It's super exciting to see The Pixie Chronicles really start to feel like a series!

  5. Awww I’m so happy that 2018’s being so good to you. You totally deserve it, lovely! ♥ House hunting sounds so EXCITING, and I am so jealous of your cruise!!! My friends and I were planning on one for our after-high school graduation getaway, but we hit some complications so that plan went down the drain. D: Anyway, good luck with your editor and the rest of your writing!!

Aww, well thankfully you never get too old for a cruise! Hopefully you’ll be able to plan for one someday 🙂

Thank you! I’m really feeling like 2018 is turning into a good, personal year for me and I just want to keep that positivity going. It’s stressful and scary, but I’m keeping my eyes straight ahead!
